The Importance of CanMEDS Roles

"Developed by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, CanMEDS is a framework that identifies and describes the abilities physicians require to effectively meet the health care needs of the people they serve" (AMMI Canada n.d.).

A competent physician integrates the competencies of all seven CanMEDS Roles:

• 1. Medical Expert (the integrating role)
• 2. Communicator
• 3. Collaborator
• 4. Leader
• 5. Health Advocate
• 6. Scholar
• 7. Professional
